Is Big Table a Print On Demand (POD) publisher?
No, we're the one who hear writers complain about their experiences with POD publishers! We've met writers who were so disappointed with their POD book—after spending all that time and money on it—that they were too embarrassed to show it to us!
What's the difference between POD publishing and Big Table Publishing?
When you send your manuscript to a POD place, they don't read it; they just format it and print it, then sell copies to you at a little under retail. Aside from the impersonal factory production approach and lack of marketing of your book, the biggest problem with POD publishing is that it's almost impossible to make money. They print small quantities like ten or fifteen at a time, so the price per copy is high, leaving almost no margin for profit. POD places do pay royalties of a dollar or so, but only on copies ordered through them by someone other than you. You don't receive royalties on the books you order.
At Big Table Publishing we're fussy about quality because our name is going to be on your book. That's why we go over it word by word hunting for typos and offering professional, in-depth feedback about structure and style to refine your work and make it professional and marketable. Additionally, all Big Table clients receive a free copy of The Revision Process by Robin Stratton, and, using her techniques, learn how to clarify the most important elements of writing: conflict, characters, hook, setting, voice, and language.
Well, my book is pretty much ready to go... I don't need to redo it.
No offense, but if it's ready to go, why hasn't it been snapped up by a publisher? The most important tool for any writer is feedback from other writers. The reason so many are disappointed with their POD experience is because they rushed the process and didn't do the very best job they were capable of. Some of our clients have transformed their book to the point where they were able to sell it to a traditional publishing company.
