Okay, what happens once the book is ready?
We'll assign an ISBN (International Standard Book Number) which allows your book to be sold in retail stores, and send out e-mails on your behalf to people or organizations you think would be willing to review your book. We'll help you write a synopsis for your cover, and help you come up with marketing ideas.
Then we'll recommend a printer (who will send you a sample of their work) or you can choose your own. Printers charge based on number of copies and number of pages, and most have web sites that provide a calculator based on your specs. Most of our clients do an initial run of 300 copies, averaging between $3 and $4 a copy, which they retail for $12 or $15.
What about the cover?
Again, we can recommend any of the artists who have submitted their work to us, or you can design your own or work with someone you know.
So I pay for the printing and artwork?
Yes, a self-published author pays to have their book designed and printed. But remember: when you go to a POD place, you spend $1,500 or more to have a factory print up about 20 or 30 copies of your book, and you have to buy additional copies at a premium when those run out.
For about the same money, Big Table clients get 300 copies of a much higher quality book that has been vigorously edited and stripped of typos. And in the process you've become a better writer!
